Amazon review by Michael Laughrin, awarding five stars 5.0 out of 5 stars

"The most important and BEST spiritual book written in the last 100 years, "
December 23, 2009
By  Michael Laughrin (North Royalton, OH USA)
"108 Discourses of Guru Dev by Paul Mason is, in my opinion, the most important and BEST spiritual book written in the last 100 years. Swami Brahmananda Saraswati was affectionately known as Guru Dev.

Guru Dev was the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, the northernmost of the 4 seats of the Shankaracharyas established by Shankara between 1500 and 2000 years ago. This northernmost seat was vacant for many years until Guru Dev, who had been leading the life of a solitary saint living in the forest and mountains, finally agreed to take the seat.

These little 'sermons' (none is longer than 4 pages) are exceedingly clear, uplifting, and to the point. This volume has the discourses in the original Hindi and also in English (thank God, as my Hindi is not what is used to be). Of all the modern spiritual books that I have read, this one cuts through the junk like a sword and reveals the diamond truth that is at the core of the Vedic teachings. Most of the important topics are mentioned, such as Enlightenment (moksha), meditation, karma, the caste system, possessions, obstacles on the Path, Maya, dharma, and many, many others.

In my opinion, you must buy this book."

Five Stars  The Book Of a Lifetime!
By James A. Lynch Jr. on August 23, 2015
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase

This tome by Paul Mason is truly a remarkable book of great depth and tremendous compassion.

It is like taking a retreat in the 1960’s directly with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as your guide. The book definitely shows the very roots of TM and the significance and power of the TM technique itself.

Indeed in the very first few pages of the book you get a wonderful overview, in Maharishi’s own words, on the TM methodology itself. For someone like me who was initiated into my sitting mantra by my fantastic and late Aunt Initiator Effie Neville in 1976 it was like taking a shower in a cool stream. It reawakened in me the whole approach of effortlessness and naturalism that is at the very root of TM. Immediately upon absorbing the words that Paul relayed I found my meditation progressing at a much deeper level than before. These first few pages would be worth ten times the price of the book alone they were that valuable!

As if this wasn’t enough the book touches on the greatness, majesty and compassion of the late Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath Swami Brahmanand (better known as “Guru Dev”). The book shows just what type of devoted devotee Maharishi was to Guru Dev and that his love of Guru Dev motivated his entire effort at spreading the “TM technique”. Mr. Mason shows that Maharishi’s whole being and life was devoted to distilling the truth as espoused by Guru Dev and not just his “own” cobbled together theories.

In this way the author subtly address Maharishi’s various detractors with aplomb. Those who frequently claim that “Maharishi just made up the TM technique as some kind of pop meditation technique which is designed to lure the uniformed and to enrich his own personal fortune.“ That by showing the deep spiritual connection that Maharishi had with Guru Dev and that he could have hardly started such activities without other authorized devotees of Guru Dev knowing precisely what Maharishi was teaching.

Through Mr. Mason’s exposition we gain an appreciation of the deep power of Guru Dev in a way that finds him very approachable but still awe inspiring. In this way Mr. Mason, without interjecting his own interpretations, skillfully distills from the very words of Guru Dev and Maharishi their deep and unbounded love for all of humanity.

I was and am so moved by this book and cannot recommend it highly enough for any devotee of Maharishi, TM or even a practitioner of Buddhist Mindfulness, for there is something for all in this book that is sure to enrich your life and spiritual practice.

'Dandi Swami' front cover
Dandi Swami
Tales of meetings with Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati,
the Guru's Will, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
& the Shankaracharyas of Jyotir Math

'Dandi Swami' is a book celebrating the life of Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati and explores the lives of others from his lineage of thinkers. Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati was a contempory of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the man who popularised Transcendental Meditation. Both used to listen to the teachings of the same guru, Shankaracharya Swami Brahmanand Saraswati. When the guru died he left a Will empowering one of his disciples to take his place as Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, in the Himalayas. Not everyone was happy with the Will, and there have been disputes over succession ever since. It appears that Dandi Swami was offered the post of Shankaracharya but declined, preferring a life of seclusion.

'Dandi Swami' presents many quotations from Dandi Swami's teacher, Swami Shantanand, providing food for thought, and spiritual solice.

'Dandi Swami' includes selected quotations from Swami Brahmanand, a guru who had the ear of the first President of India.

'Dandi Swami' explores spiritual questions through the eyes of those that meet with Dandi Swami. Accounts of visitors such as Rob H van Dijk and Paul Mason offer glimpses into the life and beliefs of this humble hermit. An interview with David Sieveking offers futher insights into the retiring personality of Dandi Swami.

'The Maharishi:
The Biography of the Man Who Gave Transcendental Meditation to the World'
Paul Mason

Paul Mason's ground-breaking biography of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, previously available in hardback from Element Books, is now available once more, in a new and revised paperback edition from Evolution Publishing UK.

The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi leapt to prominence in the 1960s when his teaching of Transcendental Meditation (TM) and his widely-reported involvement with The Beatles and the Beach Boys provoked reactions ranging from reverence to mockery. Now Paul Mason takes us behind the scenes, drawing on scarce and previously unpublished material.

Much more than just a biography, this is a seminal enquiry into the aims and methods of Maharishi's organisations. We are taken deep into the Indian tradition of the Vedic scriptures, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.

In this comprehensive biography Paul Mason describes the early days of Maharishi's teachings in the 1950s, the popularising of TM through the 1960's, the introduction of SCI (the presentation of TM in specifically scientific terms), to the attempts to enter mainstream politics with the Natural Law Party.
