'Spiritual oxygen' - Mike Hutchinson

by Paul Mason
(author of 'The Maharishi' The Biography of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi - Element Books 1994)

'Mala - A String of Unexpected Meetings' is the tale of a recent visit by the author of 'The Maharishi' to the holy town of Rishikesh. Set beside the River Ganges and surrounded by the Himalayan foothills, Rishikesh is known as the gateway to the 'Land of the gods' and is an important point of pilgrimage for devout Hindus. For centuries saints and sages have come to practice meditation here. The area has also become associated with The Beatles after they paid a much-publicised visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram.

'Mala' offers an opportunity for readers to share some of the author's experiences and chance encounters with fellow travellers, local inhabitants and holymen. The meetings with Dandi Swami Narayananand (a contemporary of Mahesh Yogi) and Baba Roopanand are of particular interest since both of them have apparently attained the goal of their practices, i.e. self-realisation or enlightenment.

'Mala' also gives much attention to current spiritual teachings, with description of various meditation techniques and self-help systems. The traditional practice of hands-on healing, most often referred to as Reiki, is given detailed attention.

Offering hope and reassurance to anyone embarked upon the quest for personal development, 'Mala' provides a gentle journey into the realm of spiritual beliefs and practices.
Note. Mala is the Hindi term for a garland, necklace or rosary.
